Medical Metabolic Program

The roots of the program date back to 1986.  I was a sophomore at Arizona State University in my Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science program.  Personal training at One on One studios,  I trained my clients in a boot camp style, educating them on calorie counting, sports nutrition, and tracking their caloric expenditure and intake.  At that time, calorie counting books and estimated exercise expenditure were used and recorded in a $3 notebook from Walgreen’s.  It was a very successful program having trained all clients from the elite to the sedentary.  Having foregone my dream of owning my own gym and training clients, I pursued my dream to become a physician and obtain the highest level of knowledge possible.  I now feel confident in that not only can I help clients obtain their dreams and goals, but also provide the medical expertise to optimize their health in an unforeseen manner, to integrate medicine and fitness.  My weight loss and weight gain principles haven’t changed since then, except now I’m a board certified physician in internal medicine and sports medicine and we user higher technology to assess your metabolic status, medical state of health, exercise prescription based on the metabolic testing, internet based tracking (sorry notebook), and heart rate monitor watch tracking.

Our approach to health and well-being is a holistic one. We have a doctor, and an exercise physiologist highly integrated with our metabolic program. Our metabolic testing equipment is cutting edge and state of the art and our DEXA scanner is known as the gold standard for measuring body composition.

By using precise equipment to test your metabolism, all the guesswork is removed from the process of getting to you to your fitness and health goals in the most efficient and effective ways.

Our programs are 100% tailored to you because everybody is truly different and individuals have specific needs when it comes to our health. Dr. Carfagno also plays an essential role in the program because he closely monitors the medical aspect of your program from getting labs drawn to performing a stress test to monitoring trends. Throughout the program, we weigh-in our participants every two weeks to ensure that the program and you are on track.

We want to monitor and support you every step of the way with Accountability and encouragement. Accountability is the cornerstone for success in our program. By creating multiple devices from online dietary and exercise accounting, to SSMI’s ‘Big Brother’ email supervision, to every 2 week weigh-ins, there is no time to ‘let your guard down’. We also provide support by phone or email with whatever questions or concerns you may have regarding our program. Conveniently available right in Dr Carfagno’s office we offer prescription-grade Xymogen brand supplements, and to promote a thermogenic weight and fat loss state, we institute high quality and super concentrated Vitamin B12 and M.I.C. shots at your 2 week weigh-ins. And, for those that have the need for that extra help with emotional and subconscious eating, Dr. Carfagno will prescribe the medication Phentermine, an appetite suppressant to assist you.

We know that research has shown that people are more likely to lose weight and keep it off if they combine exercise with their diet plan.  That’s why we take evaluate your fueling and training schedule and coordinate it to fit into your busy personal and business lifestyles.  Either at SSMI physically here, or with their high tech virtual webcam-based exercise sessions, as well as our partnership with top personal trainers and strength and conditioning experts in the East Valley--to provide to you a safe yet challenging workout plan.  Of course, you may also choose to work out on your own, utilizing the information gleaned from your exercise tests, but many of our new exercisers prefer to have an expert watching and guiding them.
