Pre-Test Instructions

The preparation for a test can significantly affect the results of physiological testing.  Thus,  if your are scheduled for testing at our office, it is important for you to read the instructions for your test(s) below and make sure understand and follow them.  Please call our office at 480-664-4615 you have any specific questions not answered here.

Lab Draws

  • No food or drink after midnight for FASTING LABS (you will be told if your labs are fasting on your lab order sheet).  DO drink WATER only.  No juices, coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc.
  • Drink 20-32 oz. water 1-2 hours prior to appointment
  • Wear comfortable clothes with exposed arms or loose sleeves that can be easily pulled up

Micronutrient Test

Continue taking supplementation as prescribed by your physician. No fasting is required.

Proper hydration is recommended to assist with the blood drawn.  Test can only be done

Monday-Thursday before 4pm to ensure same day pickup.

Cardiovascular Tests

Patient must be fasting. Proper hydration is recommended to assist with the blood drawn.  Test

can only be done Monday-Thursday before 4pm to ensure same day pickup.

Hormone and Thyroid Tests

No Fasting is required for this test alone. However, if physician has ordered Thyroid Plus

Adrenal the patient will want to have blood drawn closest to 8am for the most accurate cortisol

measurement. Proper hydration is recommended to assist with the blood drawn. Test can only

be done Monday-Thursday before 4pm to ensure same day pickup.

Genetic Tests

No fasting is required.

DXA Scan (Body Composition/Bone Mineral Density)

  • Minimal fast of 6 hours prior to test (drink adequate WATER ONLY to maintain proper hydration while fasting--drink 20-32 oz. water 1-2 hours prior to test)
  • No caffeine, diuretics or smoking prior to test on the day of test
  • No biphosphonates or calcium supplementation within 24 hours
  • No exercise 12 hours prior to test, no heavy workouts within 24 hours of test (to limit dehydration)
  • Wear comfortable clothing with NO METAL (zippers, clasps, rivets, buckle, etc)
  • Minimize metallic jewelry (you will have to remove it for the test)
  • Do not have this test performed if you are pregnant
  • No nuclear scans or any scans requiring ingested, intravenous or injected dyes within 2 weeks

VO2 max

  • No heavy or intense exercise 48 hours prior to test; no exercise at all 12 hours prior to test
  • No caffeine (unless part of your normal pre-race routine) or smoking 12 hours prior to test
  • Light snack 1 hour prior to test or your preferred preparation for a hard workout/race.  If you are getting a DXA scan done, you may bring a light pre-workout snack to have between the DXA and VO2 max instead of eating before the DXA.
  • Wear comfortable exercise clothes and shoes for your test mode (treadmill or bike)
  • If you are bringing your own bicycle:
  • Rear tire must have smooth tread
  • Install a rear quick release compatible with trainers (rounded ends)
  • Ensure that your bicycle is in good working order and the drivetrain clean and lubed
  • Don't forget your shoes if you have clipless pedals!
  • You may use your own heart rate monitor strap if it is Polar compatible
  • Bring inhaler if appropriate
  • See medications list; take other medications as directed
  • This is a maximal exertion test, be sure you are able to perform the test safely by getting medical clearance from you primary care physician!

RMR

  • Minimal fast of 6 hours prior to test (water is ok, drink 20-32 oz. water at least 1 hour prior to test)
  • No exercise 24 hours prior to test
  • No caffeine or smoking 12 hours prior to test
  • Early morning is ideal for test (before 10 am)
  • Take normal medications as directed

Pulmonary Function Test

  • Wear clothes comfortable for vigorous breathing
  • Light snack 1 hour before test
  • Have inhaler if appropriate
  • See medications list
  • No caffeine, smoking or exercise 12 hours prior to test
  • No albuterol 3 hours prior to test

Stress Test

  • Wear comfortable exercise clothes and shoes to perform activity (walking/running on treadmill)
  • WOMEN:  Please DO NOT wear bras with metal, non-metal sports bras only!
  • No skin lotion or oil on the chest and abdominal areas
  • Light snacks 1 hour before test (NO snack if having blood draw, drink 20-32 oz. water 1-2 hours prior to test)
  • NO caffeine, smoking or exercise 12 hours prior test Medications ~ See List
  • Bring your inhaler if appropriate

Medications:

ALL Beta Blockers need to be DISCONTINUED the morning of the test including:

  • Acebutolol hydrochloride (Sectral),
  • Atenolol (Tenormin),
  • Betaxolol (Kerlone),
  • Bisoprolol (Zebeta),
  • Carteolol (Ocupress),
  • Carvedilol (Coreg),
  • Esmolol (Brevibloc),
  • Labetalol (such as Normodyne or Trandate),
  • Metoprolol (such as Lopressor or Toprol XL),
  • Nadolol (Corgard),
  • Penbutolol sulfate (Levatol),
  • Pindolol (Visken),
  • Propranolol (Inderal), Sotalol (Betapace AF), Timolol (Blocadren)

Diabetic medications (oral) including: Chlorpropamide, Tolazamide, Tolbutamide, Gliclazide, Glimepiride, Glipizide, Glyburide, Rosiglitazone, Metformin, Pioglitazone, Nateglininde, and Repaglininde need to be DISCONTINUED the morning of the test. Insulin needs to be cut in half.

Insulin pumps should be DISCONTINUED.
